Day 1: Fall 2014 Teams Touch Down at Notman House

September 2, 2014 at 10:39 am

Today marks the beginning of our Fall 2014 cohort, and we could not be more thrilled to have a full house again! Out of 350 applicants, only the top 8 are joining us in Notman House this fall. In typical FounderFuel fashion, all of the new companies will be pitching at our Show and Tell event to their fellow cohort participants, as well as the Real Ventures partners.

As the new companies get settled in on their first action-packed day, the pressure is on for this cohort to live up to the FounderFuel legacy! Follow all the action here on our blog, Facebook page, and Twitter feed.

Day 53: Can The Companies Pitch?

April 16, 2014 at 3:20 pm

You can tell the program is coming to a close very soon because Show & Tell III is right around the corner. It’s tomorrow!

This is the last time for the companies to give their updates and present their almost finished Demo Day deck. One of the most challenging tasks for a CEO is to to take their whole business and condense it into a straightforward presentation in plain English. To help them achieve this, we set up a week of training sessions in anticipation of Show & Tell III.

In preparation for tomorrow the teams had a 5 hour pitch prep session with our lovely Mentor, Austin Hill. Austin gave the teams an in-depth look at various different kinds of pitches and went over the bad, the good and the great. He then listened as each CEO did their pitch and gave them some really honest but constructive feedback.

To follow-up on yesterday’s session the companies each sat down for one-on-ones with our GM, Ian Jeffrey. In these sessions the final details of their decks were reviewed so that they’re fully prepared to pitch to a room of their peers and FounderFuel Mentors tomorrow afternoon.

It’s been a hectic week but it should be fun tomorrow to see just how far the teams have come!

Want to check the teams out for youself? Check them out at Demo Day on May 13th. Get your tickets here.

Day 49: AccelerateMTL, were you there?

April 11, 2014 at 11:46 am

Today was the big day!

The Montreal and San Francisco tech communities were brought together for AccelerateMTL at the historic Rialto Theatre on Parc Ave. This year’s focus was Scaling Innovation. The morning featured round table discussions and the afternoon was filled with speakers who gave a behind-the-scenes look at what scaling innovation really means.

Day 12: Mentor Day Pictures Have Arrived

February 19, 2014 at 8:29 am

Last Thursday we held our first big event of this cohort. The teams were put through major Mentor whiplash during an all day “Mentor Speed Dating” event. It was definitely a packed house, we had about 100 mentors from all across Canada and the USA who were all there to give the teams valuable information and advice to help them build and grow their companies.

Check out some of the photos from the day and no, we still aren’t giving up who the companies are this cohort ;)!

Day 1: Tough Love for the Summer 2013 Cohort

April 16, 2013 at 12:11 pm

As the summer 2013 cohort got underway yesterday, the companies jumped right to work presenting their pitch to fellow participants, and of course, the FounderFuel team.

What is it that they say about being tougher on the ones you love? Well, as John Stokes and JS Cournoyer assured the companies, their criticism comes from the heart!

With these words began the first Show and Tell of the season. The participating companies went up to pitch in alphabetical order. Some of these companies are in very early stages, others have a million users; but they all got a hard, cold reality check and plenty of food for thought on how to improve their pitch.

As teams embark on the adventure of FounderFuel, they will receive advice and opinions from many different people. It is up to the teams to exercise good judgment and be selective on which advice to follow, as John succinctly put it: “Don’t always do what we say”.

Over the course of the afternoon, John, JS and Ian provided on-point feedback and nuggets of wisdom. Here are a few choice investor quotes, from the heart:

“This is not exactly aspirational, exciting stuff”

“You just lowered the bar on what traction means”

“It [the message] is under a thick blanket of anecdote”

“I felt like you were preaching rather than selling”

“Too much whoosh not enough whack” [translation: too much wind not enough thunder]

“How much would that presentation cost you if you had to pay per word?”

“What is your end game?” / “I don’t know what you do”

Here are a few shots from the day:

Roadshow Week 1: That’s a Wrap!

January 25, 2013 at 3:41 pm

Today marks the end of the first week of our Roadshow–man, what a trip! We kicked things off in Montreal on Monday with a great turnout and lots of great prospects, then headed to Halifax for a warm welcome and great conversations, then stopped in Ottawa and caught up with some alums and mentors (not to mention some great new faces!), and finally headed to Waterloo to meet with a few great startups. All in the space of a week!

We start it all again next week, with Quebec City on Monday, Drop-Ins on Tuesday, and Toronto on Wednesday. It’ll be great to see more alums, mentors, and the fresh faces of Summer 2013. We can’t wait!

Haven’t registered for next week’s Roadshow stops? You can still do so here

In the meantime, if you have questions or just feel like dropping us a line, feel free to do so at
