“It’s Not Goodbye” – a see you later blog from our Program Manager Emma Williams

October 13, 2015 at 12:27 pm

I entered the startup world completely by accident. I’d never heard the word startup before, all I knew was that I was applying to a  job located about 100m from my front door (very convenient, I know). A few weeks later I found myself as one of the early employees at OOHLALA Mobile working as their Community Manager. It was there that I fell in love with this amazing, vibrant and diverse startup community that is developing in Montreal. Although I loved my job at OOHLALA and believed in what they were doing (and I still really do!), I wanted more, I wanted to be at the heart of this community. I wanted to help build it out, to help it thrive, to meet everyone I could and learn everything I could. I knew my ideal job would be at Real Ventures / FounderFuel, where I would get to interact with dozens of different companies and people daily. But of course they weren’t hiring so  I bided my time and then one day, there it was. FounderFuel was hiring a new Program Manager, this was my chance. I jumped at the opportunity.

And here I am, 4 Cohorts later and what a ride it’s been! I wish I could properly put this experience into words but if I tried, this post would be 10 pages long (and I don’t want to bore you). What I will say is that the people I’ve met, the things I’ve learnt, the experiences I’ve had, the companies I’ve had the pleasure of working with, everything has been over and above what I ever could have expected. I’ve worked with 30 companies over the last 4 Cohorts and it’s been incredibly satisfying and exhilarating. But as most startup founders, employees and mentors know, the startup bug isn’t a fictional thing, it’s real and it’s strong and it’s pulling me back in. I’m ready to dive back into playing a key role in the growth of a startup from an operational standpoint. Which company is still to be determined, all I can say is that I’m very excited about what the future holds and am looking forward to this next chapter. This decision has not come easy, or quickly, but it’s official. The Fall 2015 Cohort will be my last as Program Manager at FounderFuel.

And with that, Sylvain and I are on the hunt for someone who’s ready to step up to the challenge of becoming FounderFuel’s new Program Manager. We’re on the hunt for someone who’s crazy passionate about startups, innovation, entrepreneurship and wants to play a pivotal role in the Canadian ecosystem. Think you’re the perfect fit? Send me an e-mail (info@founderfuel.com), I’d love to chat!

A few years ago I was just about to head home after a trip to visit family in Toronto. I gave my 3 year old cousin a hug and said goodbye. She looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, “what do you mean goodbye? Am I never going to see you again?”. To avoid a tantrum, I quickly corrected myself and said, “no of course not! It’s not goodbye, I meant to say, I’ll see you later”. Her tears quickly disappeared and it got me thinking. She couldn’t have been more right, the word goodbye has so much finality to it, and I don’t plan on leaving this amazing startup community anytime soon. So, FounderFuel, this isn’t goodbye. This is see you later.

Day 12: Culture, the PasswordBox Way

February 24, 2015 at 4:01 pm

passwordbox

Yesterday afternoon we had a visit from 4 core members of the PasswordBox team. They came to chat with the current Cohort about team culture, how you instill it and how you can maintain it through growth and acquisition by Intel Security. On the panel were Marc-Antoine Ross (Co-Founder & Director of Data Engineering), Greg Whiteside (Employee #1 & Director Engineering), Olivier Beaulieu (Employe #8 & Technical Team Lead) and Ian Jeffrey (Employee #32 & VP Product Marketing).

Some of the key topics covered were:

1) Hiring
– Always hang-out with a potential employee before hiring them.  Would you want to have a beer with them on a Friday night after a long week of work?
– Always hire people who are smarter than you. If you feel dumb in the interview, that’s a good sign!
– PasswordBox has instilled a culture of attracting great people to the company and spending time with them before hiring them.
– Everyone should have options.

2) Transparency
– PasswordBox has a culture of transparency. This is key in building a strong culture. Every employee is always aware of everything going on, from potential investors to potential acquirers and deals on the table.
– Set a weekly time to meet with the entire company, Monday works great because everyone is pumped up for the week. At PasswordBox they do all hands lunches every Monday where Dan gives the updates on the company and every team goes over what they’re working on.

3) Firing
– If after one week you aren’t convinced about someone, you should let them go. After 1 week it gets harder and harder to fire someone.
– The biggest mistake is trying to keep someone who you know isn’t a good fit

Here are some of the tidbits shared with the Cohort:

“Invest in the culture of people, not in the space you work in”
“Dan comes in every morning and fist bumps every single employee, he did it when we were 3, 8 and now we’re 50+ and he still does it.”
“Culture creates retention.”
“When does culture start? It starts day 1, when you meet someone and want to work together and build something. From there, it grows organically.”
“Every morning when I show up to work, my colleagues are genuinely happy to see me and greet me with high-fives, it’s like one huge family.”
“We’re 50+ employees and I honestly can’t imagine PasswordBox without any of them. They’re all part of who we are. That’s when you know you have a strong culture.”

ooomf is hiring!

October 3, 2012 at 5:05 pm

FounderFuel alum ooomf is hiring! They put together a great post on how their “merry band of idiots needs another.” We’ve included it below [and we’re pretty sure you’ll be laughing by the end of it]

Our Merry Band of Idiots Needs Another

(A developer to be precise.)

At some point, we got it in our heads to fix mobile app discovery. We wished there was a better way to find apps and a better way for developers to get their apps out there. What a glorious world that would be, we thought!

We even got VCs excited about it, and they gave us money to do it. Money. Us! They must be nuts. Then we went to the market and got back much love. So now we’ve got a long list of customers waiting for us to deliver and a pile of investors breathing down our necks, ready to slap us around if we don’t.

We need help.

We may have gotten a little sauced one night (read: week) and now have some brilliant ideas in the queue.

We just gotta build ‘em, market test ‘em and rebuild ‘em a few more times. Our current dev team is a little under-staffed and over-intoxicated so we want some fresh blood. Your blood. (BLOOD!)

We’re not looking for anything specific beyond ‘developer’, so you tell us why we want you. Love PHP? Awesome, we use that. Rather spend your days tweaking jQuery until every animation makes your pants wet? Cool, bro. Even if you’re one of those freaks who gets aroused at a 0.2ms database query-time reduction, we wanna talk to you.

Perks include cool work, beer in the fridge and unlimited free hugs from a handsome Mexican.

We’ll also pay you and stuff so you can buy food and whatnot.

If you’d like to apply, get out your resume, throw it away, and talk to us like we’re human. Send us something cool you made or a long rant on how terrible the app stores are right now and how, if you were in charge, everything would be better.

BTW, We’re located in sunny Montreal, Canada.
